The Embassy Theatre is situated centre stage in Wellington’s buzzing downtown entertainment precinct of Courtenay Place. Originally built in 1924, the theatre is recognised as a place of historical significance by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and is the only custom-built 1920's cinema still in use in New Zealand.
Designed in the classical style, The Embassy has many fine features such as marbled staircases, wrought iron handrails, original tiled foyers and exquisite plastered ceilings. The theatre has three screens, the largest of which is thought to be one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Other amenities include a snack bar and Blondini's Cafe.
Wellington's grandest cinema venue shot to fame when it hosted the world première of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Since then The Embassy has hosted many other film premieres and it also takes part in the New Zealand International Film Festival.
“The Embassy theatre is amazing. A beautiful old theatre with huge seating capacity, a massive screen, and grand marble staircases, it’s all just stunning. Completely updated with incredible sound - the only place I go to see movies!”
